The Homes were started by a small group of parents concerned that their children, having reached adulthood, should obtain the best available living and care conditions.
The initial home, Greenbanks House, in Barham, was acquired in 1980 using a combination of capital provided by the families of the residents with a long-term mortgage. The other homes followed in like manner in later years.
Each house is owned by a Limited Company the shares of which are owned by the family of the residents. Each home is registered with the Care Quality Commission and has a registered Manager who manages the Home and its care staff.
Normally, the annual operating costs of each home are met from the fees agreed with the Local Authority responsible for the resident and some of the allowances to which the residents are entitled. Residents have their own weekly allowance to spend as they wish. All residents have a say in the running of their home, usually at weekly residents’ meetings and, in addition to choosing next week’s dinner menus, a busy schedule of activities and outings results.
Residents specify their individual needs and wishes in their person centred care plan, reviewed annually, and that forms the basis of the level and type of care provided to individuals.
